Sweet Chestnut
Sweet Chestnut
Castanea sativa
I have recently returned from a holiday spent walking in the beautiful Pindos National Park in the very North West of Greece
This area is mountainous with deep valleys and gorges, remote and smothered with a rich biodiversity of trees, both deciduous and coniferous. At this time of the year all the trees are turning wonderful colours, from deep reds and rust to yellows and gold. One of the most beautiful is the Sweet Chestnut, also known as the Spanish Chestnut, with its distinctive spiny leaves, now fading to a beautiful pale yellowy brown colour. As the leaves fall to the ground the silver twisted bark of this beautiful tree is revealed
