Pysanky
Pysanky
This is the name given to Ukrainian Easter Eggs
These are real chicken eggs, sometimes hard boiled, sometimes raw or blown and, if possible, the first egg laid by a young hen! And then highly decorated with traditional folklore designs
The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty “to write” or to “inscribe” as the egg designs are not painted but inscribed with beeswax
These eggs are given at Easter to bless every part of life in the Ukraine as a talisman of prosperity, fertility, healing and protection, long life, and bounty
Natalya Cumming is Ukrainian and has run her business, Experience Ukraine for many years. From her base in Herefordshire she organises workshops in Pysanky egg painting, but now she is deeply involved in fundraising for the people of the Ukraine
