This plump game bird was first introduced into this country from Western Europe in 1700s as a new game bird
Also known as the French partridge, it is thought that our Christmas ‘Partridge in a Pear Tree’ comes from the French word for Partridge ‘perdrix’ which sounds rather like pear tree
Found in England and lowland parts of Scotland and Wales
Common on farmland where it breeds on open scrub and lays its eggs on the ground
