Book of the Month – The Flow
The Flow – Rivers, Waters and Wildness
By Amy-Jane Beer
This book is written by Amy-Jane Beer, a biologist, nature writer and kayaker. She has spent much of her life in and round water but it was the death of a friend, in a kayaking accident that proved to be the catalyst for her to write this book
The writer’s narrative flows like a river, sometimes in full spate, at other times gently meandering whilst interweaving scientific facts, mythology and her own personal story into her prose
Beer travels across the country, describing Scottish salmon rivers, the Fens, the chalk streams of southern England and the water courses close to her home in Yorkshire. Her style encourages discussion, but she writes beautifully and descriptively in an engaging way
This books is a nature book with a call to action. Beer highlights issues relating to pollution, overuse and climate change in our rivers and waters. A topical subject at the moment
