This recording was made in the Algonquin Provincial Park by Glenn Hubert. Acoustic guitar is combined with a beautiful backdrop of Loon calls on a secluded lake
Loons are water birds they spend all their life on the water only coming ashore to mate and incubate their eggs. They are efficient swimmers as their legs are placed far back on their bodies, making them agile in the water but with the downside that they appear awkward on land. In the air they are fast and migrating Loons have been recorded flying at speeds over 70 mph
In the UK Loons are called Great Northern Divers. A Winter visitor to our shores, they breed in Greenland, Iceland and North America. However there are occasional records of them breeding in Scotland but these are very rare!
