Spring Usher

With a very variable appearance, this moth can be seen now. A harbinger of Spring!
The males vary from almost black and white to a drab, grey and rather plain appearance
Adults emerge from overwintering pupae in February. The females are wingless and climb up tree trunks where the males fly weakly to them
The larvae feed mainly on oak. Fairly common in England and Wales, found in woodland, parks and gardens with oak
With a wingspan of 23-28 mm
