Swallowtail Butterfly
Swallowtail Butterfly
Papilio machaon
This photo is from my holiday abroad in Croatia but this spectacular Butterfly can be seen in UK. The UK’s largest and rarest Butterfly, it is only found in the wet fenlands of the Norfolk Broads. It feeds on flowers such as Thistles and Ragged Robin. The Swallowtail Butterfly, Papilo machaon britannicus, has pale yellow wings with black veins and blue margins
Although its numbers declined during the last century it is now benefitting from careful conservation management. There are also occasional sightings in the UK of migrant butterflies of the continental race
