Conversations With A Lark

Conversations With A Lark

By Hinako Omori

Skylark by Matthew Stadlen

To mark the 150th Anniversary of the composer Vaughan Williams’ birth, BBC Radio 3 featured the premiere of Hinako Omori’s Conversations With A Lark, a new electronic re-working of William’s much loved piece Lark AscendingThis is a stunningly beautiful piece of music – an immersive experience

Between The Ears: Lark Descending is recording of this Radio 3 Broadcast. The aim was to highlight the decline of this cherished birdsong. As part of this programme the sounds of Skylarks are captured close to Vaughan Williams’ childhood home in Surry by twitcher and contributor, Lucy ‘Lapwing’ Hodson in the North Downs. She is joined by the celebrated violinist, Jennifer Pike on the heathlands at Leith Hill Place to hear the Skylarks nesting there

Vaughan William’s Lark Ascending is one of the most popular pieces of classical music. Written in 1914 it is inspired by the 1881 poem of the same name by George Meredith

‘He rises and begins to round,
He drops the silver chain of sound
Of many links without a break….’

After years of decline there is some hope recent reports indicate that in certain areas in this country numbers of Skylarks are increasing! Let us hope that by raising awareness and continuing with vital conservation work this trend will continue
