Music of the Month – Bryan the Landlord
For August’s Music – I have chosen Bryan Taylor playing his son’s guitar
Bryan was our Landlord for the days we spent on Foula Island. He is the retired Skipper of the Foula Ferry
Bryan is a granite boulder of a man, slightly intimidating, but kind and helpful and he drives a vehicle about the island that he built – which could be straight out of a Mad Max movie. On arrival we asked him if, per chance we could have a couple more glasses as there were only two in the cupboard
To which he replied “ expecting guests are you?” with a fierce glint in his eye (having just arrived on an island of 28 it was of course, unlikely)
On the day of our departure he came to take us to the ferry and spotted his son’s guitar on the wall of the chalet – as he lifted it from the wall, a softness seemed to descend, and he cradled it like a baby before playing – thank you Bryan
On this island of 28 are some exceedingly good musicians. In my opinion it is one of the vital ingredients that binds together this small island community particularly through the long hard winters
