A fine example of an old nursing shawl with hand twisted tassels on all four sides
With a cream and stone ground with overcheck in shades of violet, duck egg blue, lapus blue and fudge brown
This is a one off item
The nursing shawls were originally used to ‘cwtch’ or carry a baby
The shawl which was square in shape and usually fringed with hand twisted tassels, was folded into a triangle and draped over the shoulders and around the baby, the right side was then taken under the arm and brought up around the baby, keeping the child safely in place and leaving the mother’s hands free to work
These nursing shawls are becoming increasingly rare to find
These are old textiles and we carefully check the condition of each shawl
The shawls are washed in a natural wool wash and treated with our own anti moth and wool tonic, restored when necessary, and only then offered for sale
